DLS Esthetics - Saturday Spotlight

DLS has been in business for 6 months. Dana is the only licensed Esthetician in this area which makes her business unique to Western Alaska.

There is more that meets the eye to DLS Esthetics. Dana offers a variety of services, a lot that I was not aware of prior to meeting up with her.  She provides facial consultations that involve teaching clients knowledge of skin care do's and don't. Most salon's have a fee for the first initial consultation, but what makes DLS Esthetics extra caring, is that she offers the first consultation at no charge. She wants to share her knowledge of skin care to the community.  After the consultation, she will determine what kind of service meets clients specific needs. This includes facials, peels, microdermabrasion, and extractions.

On top of her skin care services, Dana also provides a full bar of waxing options, eyelashes extensions, and she is also a makeup artist!  She is currently working with three brides for their big day!

After looking at several schools in Alaska and Washington, she determined that the Glen Dow Academy in Spokane, Washington was the best for her.

Dana has been a Massage Therapist for years, and after much consideration and encouragement from her boss, she felt adding to her services was only natural. She didn't know that when she returned from school that she would be starting her own business, but with the support and how Bering Wellness is set up, everything just lined up beautifully.

My goals are to always take continuing education, in fact I have hopes to become a Master Esthetician to increase the variety of services I'm providing. If I am as successful as I hope to be, I'll also become the first AK sales rep for Lira Clincal :) Stay tuned!

What motivates you?

I think just realizing that life is short and you should follow your dreams is actually possible. My friends and family and BW have been the driving force. I also know that Andy is a great motivator and he should know that you can do anything you set your mind to and you'll always have help.  & Coffee. Actually, I LOVE what I do, so it's so easy to want to be here and knowing that I'm making a difference in someone's life is a huge motivator.

Biggest supporters Behind DLS Esthetics?

My parents. Oh my goodness, they have been so wonderful from watching my son while I attended school, to helping with advertising, to make sure I stay busy and work hard. They are my biggest supporters, I am super lucky.

What is the most rewarding aspect of running the business?

The most rewarding experience... there are so many daily. Knowing that I'm helping somebody achieve their goals for healthy skin is at the top. It's also the fact that I'm just a happier person doing what I love, and getting to spend more quality time with Andy. It's the little things! :)

Advice Column

Dana is a big supporter of local businesses! I asked her to offer advice for others that would like to start a business in Nome:

Take business courses, I know that there are free ones annually that are held here in town, ask questions! Never give up, sometimes you'll be faced with challenges, but they are also great learning experiences, and you really grow from them. Make sure you are following your city and state regulations, pay your city taxes, and get insured, know your value and worth!

What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?

Top 3 skills, you NEED to get comfortable talking yourself up about your business. If you're not confident, people will see that. Never hesitate to ask for help, and always make sure your license it active. People expect quality services.
